What is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 is an international standard that describes the criteria for a quality management system that focuses on the customer, product and/or service quality and continuous improvement. ISO stands for the “International Organization for Standardization“, the foremost internationally recognized standard making body in the world. Organizations around the world can meet the criteria in the ISO 9001 standard and become certified by a 3rd party registrar, who conducts compliance audits independent of the customer or the organization it audits.

What is a Management System?

A management system is the framework of policies, procedures and processes used to ensure that an organization can fulfill all tasks required to achieve its objectives. The ISO 9001 standard represents a Quality Management System which is just a management system with a focus on quality. Other management system standards exist as well, such as the ISO 14001 standard, which has a focus on the environment.

Why should I be interested in implementing ISO 9001?

There are two basic reasons why organizations implement the ISO 9001 quality management system standard. This first is that we live in a global market, and customers need to find suppliers that are trustworthy and professional. The ISO 9001 standard is recognized world-wide and certification can be used to show existing and potential customers that your organization is operating at an internationally acceptable level of professionalism. The second is that a well structured organization is both efficient and effective, ensuring lower costs, higher quality and the meeting of whatever goals or objectives they set out to achieve. The end result for the private sector may be higher, sustainable market and profits; for the public sector, more resources and expanded services.

Where can I get the ISO 9001 standard?

You can purchase the ISO 9001 standard in hard copy or digital form from many places such as the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), the American Society for Quality (ASQ) or straight from the ISO website itself.
